Six oil paintings from Land's End, Cornwall

There is something particular about standing at the very edge of the country at the end of the day.

At Land's End, the cliffs fall away into the Atlantic and the horizon stretches westwards without interruption. As evening approaches, the distinction between sea, sky and land begins to disappear. The light changes almost imperceptibly, moving through moments of warmth, darkness and colour before finally giving way to night.

These six paintings began with photographs I took during those fleeting moments at dusk.

But they are not intended simply as paintings of Land's End. I was interested in the feeling of being there: the stillness, the vastness and the sense of one’s own mortality and place in the world. There is something about the end of the day, particularly in a place so physically remote, that encourages you to stop and simply look and feel.

Each painting captures a different moment within that edge transition. Some skies feel heavy and approaching; others retain the last warmth of the day. Together they form more of a sequence than six separate views, variations on the same quiet interval between light and darkness.

Although rooted in Land's End, the paintings are ultimately about something less specific, the experience of standing somewhere, looking out towards a distant horizon, and allowing yourself to be still.
